How To Maintain Flexibility with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back. This narrowing may put pressure on the nerves that travel through the spine. Individuals with this condition may experience discomfort in the lower back and legs, which can impact their mobility. Here is how to maintain a degree of flexibility when facing this condition:

Low-impact Stretches

Stretching is a helpful way to support flexibility. For individuals with lumbar spinal stenosis, focusing on low-impact movements is a practical approach. Gentle stretches may help lengthen the muscles surrounding the spine without placing excessive strain on the lower back. Pelvic tilts are one such stretch, performed by lying on your back with your knees bent and gently flattening your back against the floor. Another option is the knee-to-chest stretch, which involves pulling one knee at a time toward your chest while lying on your back. Performing these movements slowly and deliberately allows you to monitor how your body responds.

Light Exercise

Engaging in light, regular exercise is another way to manage flexibility. Activities that do not cause discomfort are typically recommended. Stationary cycling provides a cardiovascular workout while keeping the spine in a stable, flexed position. Walking, either on a treadmill or outdoors on a level surface, is a simple and accessible form of movement. The following exercises can help maintain mobility and strength in the muscles that support the back:

  • Gentle yoga to improve flexibility and core strength.
  • Bridging exercises to activate the glutes and stabilize the lower spine.
  • Seated leg lifts to enhance muscle tone without straining the back.
  • Cat-cow stretches to promote spinal mobility and reduce tension.

Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression

When conservative approaches do not provide the desired outcome, medical procedures are available. Minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MILD) is a procedure designed to address a cause of stenosis. This outpatient treatment involves removing small pieces of bone and excess ligament tissue to reduce nerve compression. The procedure is typically performed through a tiny incision in the back. By creating more space in the spinal canal, this procedure aims to alleviate the pressure on the nerves. A physician can determine if you are a suitable candidate for this type of intervention based on your specific diagnosis.

Surgical Devices

For some individuals, surgical devices provide an alternative treatment option. These devices are implanted to help stabilize the spine or create more space within the spinal canal. One example is an interspinous spacer, a small device inserted between the spinous processes of adjacent vertebrae. It is designed to keep the space open when you stand or walk, which can help relieve pressure on the nerves.

Treat Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Managing lumbar spinal stenosis requires a personalized approach developed in collaboration with your healthcare team. The path you take will depend on your specific symptoms, their severity, and your overall health. From gentle stretches and light exercise to minimally invasive procedures and surgical devices, there are multiple avenues to explore. A precise diagnosis is the first step toward creating a plan that aligns with your lifestyle and needs. If you are experiencing symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis, schedule an appointment with a specialist to discuss your treatment options.
